Volunteers from charitable organizations in Niagara packed a 40-foot shipping container full of donated food and medical supplies for Ukraine.

Anna Demchyshyn, originally from Lviv, Ukraine organized the effort. Demchyshyn founded a charitable group called Aimed for Hope to help Ukraine with donated aid.

Three days into the war she reached out to the Niagara Warehouse of Hope, a charitable group in St. Catharines that ships donated supplies of all sorts to needy countries.

Anna also contacted a Niagara humanitarian group, Not Just Tourists, which collects medicine and surplus medical supplies from businesses, pharmaceutical companies, and medical professionals and sends them to places in need. Dr. Kenneth Taylor from Not Just Tourists said, “we have been sending primarily antibiotics and diabetic medicines.”

McMaster medical student Nadia Huytan-Maruschak had already been collecting medical supplies for Ukraine before she met Anna and began working with her. Huytan-Maruschak has collected about seventy boxes of medicine and medical supplies, some from as far away as Barrie, Ontario. “I just leveraged the kindness of strangers and I built a small network of citizens, nurses, parishioners, midwives, and McMaster medical students,” Nadia said.

Anna said about 16 pallets full of dehydrated food aid were donated by the Niagara Christian Gleaners. Each pallet can make up to 34-thousand meals.

Through Anna’s contacts in Ukraine, she gets lists of needed supplies and medicines from doctors and hospitals and even the mayors of some towns, and that’s how she knows what to send and who to send it to.

This is the second shipment of aid anna has sent out but the first time she’s had enough to fill a shipping container.

The shipping costs were covered by the Warehouse of Hope this time, but she is looking for supporters to help cover the cost of three more planned shipments in the future.

If you would like to help you can contact Anna through her organization’s website, AMDforHope.com.
