Colombian exotic fruit - demand and sales higher in Europe

"The increasingly healthy nutrition choices of consumers in Europe and worldwide is leading to a higher demand and sales of exotic fruit from Colombia. It is especially peeled ready to eat Goldenberries or Physalis Beeren in clamshells that are selling in high volumes,” comments Sandra Riano, from Novacampo S.A.S., a Colombian grower and exporter of exotic fruit mainly to Europe.

“We export the Cape Goldenberries, Passion Fruit and limes by sea. It takes two weeks for these containers to arrive. Our new product is dried goldenberries, which are also shipped by sea. It is a natural product without any sugars added. Fresh or dried goldenberries are a super fruit, low in calories and fructose. It is good for weight loss and blood-sugar level management for persons with diabetic problems. The rest of the exotics are exported by air. The peeled goldenberries, which are packed in clamshells, ready to eat and enjoy, are sent by airfreight in especially high volumes. The rest  of the exotic fruits such as granadilla, baby mango, maracuya, yellow pitahaya, tamarillo, cactur figs, feijoa, guava and guanabana are also exported by air. Every week we ship four containers of these fruits, while we airfreight approximately 50 pallets per week of the ready to eat clamshells,” explains Riano.

She says the market in Europe does offer good prices and has good demand, now that the weather has changed and people are out and about with most Covid restrictions lifted. “Prices are influenced at origin, by weather, internal demand, and the volume of the harvest. In Europe prices are clearly determined by the weather, where winter and spring are our high season, and by demand. Our main export market is Europe, where we work with our customers constantly with programs during the whole year.”

Riano says they are not spared from the global delays, as well as increased shipping and freight costs. “It has not been easy for us and our customers but we have to accept and cope with the increased prices of freight, packaging, fertilisation supplies, minimum wages, etc. Delayed arrivals always affect us because we cannot deliver on time to our customers for their programs and mostly the shelf life of the product is affected.”

Novacampo has its own plantations and has formed several alliances with growers across Colombia and in the Caribbean to see to the year round exotic fruit export supplies to Europe. “We have our own plantations and we work with alliances all year round with more than 300 producers. We assist them with our technical agronomists to have a good quality and safe product that complies with the MRL's in Europe. In addition we sponsor the certifications that are needed from every plantation in order to export to Europe. For example Global Gap, Rainforest, Fairtrade, etc. We source produce mainly from Cundinamarca and Boyacá in Colombia, but also from the Caribbean area. In general we source from everywhere in Colombia where the exotics are growing,” concludes Riano.
