Infinity Ward deliver meta-changing movement mechanics in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, but can you still slide cancel?

Slide canceling has been a vital movement technique since Modern Warfare launched in 2019, but October 28’s Modern Warfare 2 brings major movement changes. We’re breaking down whether you can slide cancel in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.

Modern Warfare 2019 brought the slide canceling mechanic to the meta, where players can quickly cancel the slide animation to reset their tactical sprint and break other players’ camera. It’s been one of the most powerful movement techniques ever since, but that’s set to change in Modern Warfare 2.

There have been a ton of rumors surrounding its removal in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, and we finally have confirmation after content creators and pros played the games early at the Call of Duty Next reveal event.

Content creators playing at Call of Duty Next confirmed that no, you can’t slide cancel in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2. You’ll still be able to slide but it’s much more of a commitment as you can’t stop it early, your Operator will continue sliding until the animation is over.

Top Warzone pro Aydan showed off the mechanic during Call of Duty Next, showing that the Operator will just continue to slide, making it more of a high-risk maneuver. JoeWo, sometimes called Warzone’s ‘Movement King,’ tweeted that it’s “all slide no cancel.”

Instead, Infinity Ward have brought back the Dolphin Dive mechanic in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2. By holding the crouch button, players will quickly leap forward into the prone position. Whether this will become a meta movement mechanic remains to be seen, but it could potentially be used to break cameras.

That’s not the only new movement mechanic either, as players can now hang off a ledge to peek over it, and can even fire their pistol if they have one equipped.

Rumors suggest that slide canceling’s fate isn’t decided once and for all though, as the devs will reportedly use beta feedback to decide its return.

Here’s everything we know about Modern Warfare 2 including its release date, maps, game modes, and new features.

There’s a ton of anticipation for Modern Warfare 2, and here’s everything that we know about Call of Duty 2022 so far, including the release date, the DMZ mode, and the game’s new features.

Call of Duty is heading back to the present day, with Infinity Ward in charge of delivering Modern Warfare 2 as the 2022 entry of the iconic annual gaming franchise. While Modern Warfare 2 will share the same name as 2009’s Call of Duty, it is actually a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare.

Following the Call of Duty Next event, we have received a ton of new information regarding Modern Warfare 2, including the plethora of new features, and the release date.

Here’s everything we know about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty have announced that Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28, 2022.

The devs announced the release date through a video showing off Modern Warfare 2’s key art and characters. Modern Warfare 2 then received an official worldwide reveal on June 8 which gave players a taste of what the game will bring.

In addition, the Modern Warfare 2 campaign reveal occurred during the Summer Game Fest on June 9. We also get our first glimpse of the multiplayer gameplay at the Call of Duty Next event that occurred on September 15.

Pre-orders for Modern Warfare 2 were available as of June 8 and to secure your copy you can visit the Call of Duty store. Once on the webpage, select your platform and complete the transaction for the edition of your choice.

Activision are no longer offering multiple versions of the game. This year players can choose between two editions. The standard edition will cost $70 USD, while the Vault edition will cost $99 USD. This means there is no longer a $60 edition as the cheapest Modern Warfare 2 version. You can take a look at what’s included in both editions below, or visit our dedicated guide to pre-order bonuses to find out more.

For the first time since CoD: World War II, a new title will be available on Steam as Modern Warfare 2 returns to the platform. It’s also important to note that those who pre-order Modern Warfare 2 will receive early access to the open beta.

2022’s Modern Warfare 2 is not a remake of 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. Instead, Modern Warfare 2 is a direct sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare and as a result, it will share several characteristics with the 2019 title.

The developers stated they always take inspiration from the past, but also “want to make new things.” While certain aspects of 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 may have offered inspiration, ultimately Modern Warfare 2 is set to be a brand-new title.

In addition, Modern Warfare 2 won’t feel like a simple reskin of Modern Warfare. The devs confirmed that every aspect of the game is redone and changed.

Modern Warfare 2 will have an open beta prior to its October 28 release. It first became available starting on September 16 for PlayStation users who preordered the game. Then, it will open up to other players on the platform from September 18 to 20.

Xbox and PC owners that preordered Modern Warfare 2 can enjoy the open beta from September 22 to 23, and it will finally become open to players on all platforms from September 24 to 26.

Modern Warfare 2’s campaign takes place three years after the events of Modern Warfare (2019). The story follows Task Force 141 after a US strike kills a foreign general.

The group promises revenge, so Task Force 141 teams up with Mexican Special Forces to stop the threat. Interestingly enough, Activision confirmed that anyone who pre-orders a digital edition of Modern Warfare can access the full campaign over a week before launch.

It’s worth keeping in mind that there is much more to the story that we don’t know yet, but as more information is released we’ll be sure to inform you. For more information, check out our dedicated piece on Modern Warfare 2’s campaign.

For starters, Modern Warfare 2 will feature core maps that were designed for 6vs6 gameplay and battle maps that were designed for large team gameplay. So far, seven maps have been revealed and you can check out our guide on all of the confirmed maps in Modern Warfare 2.

In terms of game modes, players can expect a mix of old favorites and new innovations. Prisoner Rescue and Knockout are just two of the new Modern Warfare 2 modes that have been revealed, while Special Ops and Gunfight are set to return to the franchise.

The new content doesn’t stop there as the devs have completely overhauled the way AI will interact with players in Modern Warfare 2. You can expect AI to be much more challenging and fierce. Meanwhile, the new movement mechanics including swimming, have allowed the devs to place an emphasis on water design throughout the multiplayer experience.

Player customization is once again at the forefront of the series and you’ll have a new and improved Gunsmith system to utilize in Modern Warfare 2. Gunsmith was not the only feature to receive an overhaul as the Perk system will also have a distinctly new feel in Modern Warfare 2.

It’s safe to say that CoD fans received two major items on their wishlist as the devs confirmed that a third-person mode would be returning to the franchise and that console players will receive an FOV slider feature.

On June 16, the Call of Duty developers confirmed in a progress report that the RICOCHET anti-cheat system will be active from day one in both Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.

While encountering cheaters is still a problem that you might face in the game, the devs promised the community that RICOCHET will continue to “get smarter and better as time progresses.” RICOCHET should boast upgraded features by the time the games are ready to launch.

Activision have officially confirmed that Warzone 2 will be a completely new game separate from Warzone. The brand-new Warzone experience will feature “new Modern Warfare II content and systems with brand-new progression,” resetting player inventories from Warzone.

For everything you need to know about the Warzone sequel, you can take a look at our Warzone 2 guide where we’ve compiled everything you need to know about the new battle royale title arriving on November 16.

Both RalphsValve and Tom Henderson claimed that classic Modern Warfare 2 (2009) maps will arrive in CoD 2022.

RalphsValve leaked five maps that players can expect to see in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. These are some of the most popular ones in the entire series and we might see them return.

Here are the returning Modern Warfare 2 maps:

A later report from industry insider Tom Henderson, stated that these maps are set to arrive in Warzone 2, but they may not be available at MW2’s launch. Instead, players might have to wait for them to be added to multiplayer post-launch.

Following Call of Duty Next, we know that classic Modern Warfare 2 maps will act as POIs in Warzone 2’s Al Mazrah map, which confirms part of Henderson’s report.

It remains to be seen if these nostalgic locations will make their way to Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer.

The Call of Duty team finally confirmed the existence of DMZ at Call of Duty Next. The mode will arrive as a free-to-play experience at the start of Modern Warfare 2 Season 1, alongside the launch of Warzone 2.0 on November 16.

While we still don’t have all of the details concerning the game mode, it has been described as “MWII’s take on Escape From Tarkov.”

DMZ mode will support up to 100 players, per Infinity Ward’s studio head in a new The Washington Post interview.

It’s expected that players will drop into several locations and will have to plunder through abandoned homes, buildings, vehicles, crates, and corpses. The DMZ mode will take place on the Warzone 2 Al Mazrah map.

Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ reportedly also features a marketplace where players can go to purchase and sell items. When you drop into this game mode, you can head to the marketplace to “earn skins, blueprints, and more.”

Modern Warfare 2’s development is a collaborative effort between almost all of Activision’s studios, with Infinity Ward leading the charge.

Here are all of Activision’s studios that likely worked on Modern Warfare 2:

Here’s a look at every Killstreak that that players could aim to earn in the Modern Warfare 2 beta including the classic Chopper Gunner.

Modern Warfare 2 will introduce a new set of Killstreaks for multiplayer fans to enjoy. Here’s a look at every Killstreak available to players during the Modern Warfare 2 beta.

Getting multiple kills in a row without dying in a Call of Duty match is not only a great feeling, but the game also rewards you with powerful Killstreaks to utilize. Over the years, players have fought their way to earning iconic Killstreaks like Attack Dogs, Chopper Gunners, and Tactical Nukes.

Thanks to the Call of Duty Next event, we know that Modern Warfare 2 players can switch freely between earning Killstreaks through consecutive kills or score. Whether you prefer the Killstreak method or the Scorestreak method, here are the shiny new toys up for grabs in Modern Warfare 2.

As previously mentioned, Infinity Ward has allowed players to choose their preferred way of playing Modern Warfare 2 by either equipping Killstreaks or Scorestreaks.

As usual, Killstreaks are earned by reaching the required kill total for that specific Killstreak without dying. It’s important to note that Killstreaks do not stack in Modern Warfare 2, which means that kills produced by your Killstreaks will not count toward your active streak.

Players will be able to select three Killstreaks but you won’t be able to change Killstreaks once a match starts. If you visit the Killstreaks menu you’ll notice a toggle at the bottom-left corner of your screen to switch from Killstreaks to Scorestreaks.

Much like previous Call of Duty games to feature Scorestreaks, players can primarily earn score through kills, assists, and playing the objective

Players will be delighted to see fan-favorite classics like the Chopper Gunner and Gunship reprise their roles as some of the most devastating Killsreaks in Modern Warfare 2.

The Juggernaut Killstreak is currently the prize that requires the most kills or score to earn, so it’s sure to pack a punch.

New additions include the S.A.E., which will use three jets to unleash an aerial explosive on a targeted area. You’ll have a chance to test out these Killstreaks throughout the Modern Warfare 2 beta, so it shouldn’t take long to figure out your ideal combination.

Arguably the most controversial Perk/Field Upgrade in CoD is making a return, as players react to Modern Warfare 2’s Dead Silence.

Modern Warfare 2 will bring back the controversial Dead Silence Field Upgrade to both multiplayer and Warzone 2.0, causing negative player reactions.

Modern Warfare 2 is set to make some drastic changes to the multiplayer mode, from a new Gunsmith to a completely refurbished Perk system.

There is some continuity though, with returning Lethal and Tactical equipment, as well as brand-new ones. The game is also set to get some new game modes as well, which players will get to try out in the beta.

With that said, one controversial Field Upgrade that caused a lot of debate in the community is returning to Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare 2. Dead Silence will be a Field Upgrade in Modern Warfare 2, leaving some happy that it won’t be a Perk, however, its very presence in the game is causing mixed reactions.

In addition to the Heartbeat Sensor receiving a nerf, players were expecting Dead Silence to either be dropped completely or be revamped. At the Call of Duty Next event, we finally got to see the new Dead Silence in action, and it seems that some changes have been made.

Dead Silence will now have a short activation animation, which sees the player pull out a device, press a button, and then have silent footsteps.

Many are confused by this, with one comment under a Reddit post about MW2’s Dead Silence saying, “I know CoD isn’t exactly realistic, but what in the hell is the point of including something like this? I press a button on a walkie talkie and now my footsteps are quiet? Why even bother?”

While the animation could stall players and be considered a nerf, it isn’t exactly a drastic one, and many in the community feel the Field Upgrade will continue to be extremely powerful in Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare 2.

Reddit user Mathiasxd148- highlighted the fact that Dead Silence will be a part of MW2 and Warzone 2.0 over in the Modern Warfare 2 subreddit, in a post titled “bruh moment.”

Clearly, this player isn’t ecstatic about the Field Upgrade’s inclusion, and they aren’t the only ones either, with comments also expressing similar opinions.

One user shares their thoughts by saying “They just don’t listen to the playerbase… Footsteps will probably sound like cinder blocks again.”

On the other hand, some aren’t mad about Dead Silence’s inclusion, with one user explaining that “having dead silence as a field upgrade is more balanced than a perk.”

We’ll have to wait and see if Dead Silence is as much of a problem for players in Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare 2 as it has been in the original Warzone upon release.
