Woolworths TV ad prompts 'apples from peach trees' confusion | Queensland Country Life | Queensland

A Woolies ad appears to show an apple being picked from a peach tree.

YES, Woolworths does know that peach trees don't produce apples.

That fairly basic fact came into question this month after a television commercial from the "fresh food people" appeared to show a gentleman picking an apple from a peach tree.

Apple grower and owner of The Bilpin Fruit Bowl Margaret Tadrosse saw the ad and wondered if anyone else did.

She videoed the commercial, then posted a clip to the Local Bilpin group Facebook page asking "who can pick the mistake in this Woolies ad?".

The responses came thick and fast from other eagle-eyed viewers, many of them apple growers.

"Might be my eyes but kinda looks like a peach tree" one respondent said.

The opening shot of the 15-second ad, as part of the supermarket's Fresh Seasonal Picks series, shows the image of a gentleman within a peach orchard immediately followed by a shot of a male arm reaching forward to pick an apple from a tree.

The ad then goes on to display Royal Gala apples in a crate with graphics indicating the fruit is on sale for $2.90/kg.

Ms Tadrosse said the giveaway was the different leaves between the first two shots.

"There is a shorter leaf on an apple tree; peach trees have longer leaves," she said.

The difference, she said, was "like night and day".

Ms Tadrosse said she felt it was degrading to apple growers and she'd e-mailed Woolworths about the advertisement.

But the perceived ruse was not intentional and more a case of editing, according to a Woolworths spokesperson.

"Our Woolworths Fresh Seasonal Picks ads highlight a wide range of fresh and locally sourced Australian fruit," the spokesperson said.

"The footage of a peach tree is used as an establishing shot at the beginning of all our current Fresh Seasonal Pick ads, including ads for raspberries, grapes, pears, apples, and stone fruit - but we can see why it might look like an oversight in this version featuring apples.

"We're proud to work closely with our growers to bring the best of Australian fresh fruit and veg to households across the country every week, celebrating the best of in season produce with our Fresh Market Updates.

"We always appreciate feedback from our growers and have passed the feedback along to our production team."

It's not the first time Ms Tadrosse has seen through the smoke and mirrors of television.

"I've seen it before where they have someone picking a piece of fruit from a tree and you know it's been placed on a tree," she said.
