In the midst of protests stemming from the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other black citizens at the hands of the police in 2020, Brother Vellies founder Aurora James had a strikingly simple idea. She called for Americans to devote 15% of their spending to Black-owned companies, an amount proportionate to the ~15% of the U.S. population that Black Americans make up. This became the 15 Percent Pledge, a measurable commitment that corporations could make to support Black businesses. Over a year later, after big design brands including West Elm, Crate & Barrel, and others signed the pledge, its impetus remains as relevant as ever: While the impacts of COVID-19 made for a rough patch for many small businesses, data shows that Black-owned businesses were hit especially hard.
